ReAct

ReAct

ReAct is an exciting new project that engages 14-19 year olds at risk of NEET in creative learning performance programmes. The young people are supported by professional artists and key workers through their programme that allows them to build on skills and gain knowledge, insight and experience in their chosen art form and in the world of the creative and cultural industries.

They also work towards a live performance and achieving their Bronze Arts Award which is a level one nationally accredited qualification. They can also do their Silver Award if appropriate. The project enhances their creative skills such as imagination, innovation, originality and flexibility, as well as skills associated with personal success and employability like lateral thinking, problem solving, negotiation, communication and team working.

Our first project collaborated with Encee Academy of Performing Arts, the Southbank Centre and resident artists, choreographer Gauri Sharma Tripathi and UK beatbox champion Shlomo. Twenty two girls from Brent took part in a series of workshops, developing their dance and vocal practice and life skills and to achieve their Arts Awards. The piece they worked on combined Kathak vocals with beatbox techniques to create an entirely new form of musical performance, ‘Urban Vani’ – Urban Voice, that was shown at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Currently 16 young people from Copland School in Brent, are working on a dance and fashion project that will culminate in a Bollywood performance at Brent’s Respect festival on July 5th, 2009. There are plans to create a Bollywood soundtrack and a short film for subsequent projects as well as performance platforms; and insights into working in the creative industries in London.

We can bring activities to your centre and can tailor the programme to suit your needs and those of the young people. The projects run until July 2010, and are funded by London Central Learning and Skills Council’s European Social Fund programme and aim to engage 14-19 year olds at risk of NEET in the boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Camden and Islington. If you have a group who you think could benefit from participating in a project and want to know more please contact Kath Veitch on 0207 691 3210 or kath@akademi.co.uk
