Based in London. Available to work in these Local Authorities

London. Available to work in all local authorities.

My art practice includes using painting, drawing, mixed media and multi-media installation. My work draws on my personal experience as a black woman of mixed-race, and confronts issues of race, culture and identity. I also focus on concerns for the environment by the use of recycled materials.

I am a practicing female Visual Artist of Anglo Nigerian heritage with 14 years experience in working as an arts education facilitator, in participatory workshops and residencies with Schools, Community organisations/groups and Arts Organisations.

I have experience of developing and delivering projects that allow the participants to explore and create both individually and collaboratively. My way of working engages processes that encourage the development of personal creative skills and fulfilment through the practice of making art together. I have worked on many projects that have resulted in public exhibition in galleries, museums, art centres and community spaces, several of which used preliminary museum and gallery visits as a starting point.

My projects are often influenced by my own practice and references contemporary Black British, African and Diaspora Artists. I can and do deliver workshops that are based on many themes that are geared to the production of large artworks including murals and banners. I provide workshops that use collage, African textiles and recycled objects to produce large artwork hangings and banners on card or fabric. Inspiration and starting points for these workshops come from resources I have based on Asafo flags of Ghana and Yoruba arts of Nigeria.

Following my graduation from Norwich School of Art & Design with BA hons in Fine Art Painting in 1996 I moved to Bristol. I took a career path in arts education receiving a Certificate for Further Adult Education Teaching, Bristol College in 1999 and Artists in Schools accredited OCN Level 3 Bristol in 2000. I continued with my practice some of which was reproduced as cards and prints and marketed nationally and internationally by Prime Arts Fine Arts Publishing House. In 2002 I started by company Gloarts Ltd which produces original artworks, prints and cards, and is available for commissions, exhibitions, presentations and workshops. Gloarts became a studio holder at Spike Island studios in 2004. My professional experience has included completion several large public art commissions and working with key educational and community organisation in Bristol the South West and nationally including Norwich, Exeter and Nottingham and London.

I have exhibited in Bristol Arnolfini and Museum, in Exeter, Nottingham, Norwich and in recently at Rich Mix in Bethnal of Green London. I currently have commission for Brent Museum .

In 2005 I won a place on the ‘Calling’ Watershed digital arts residency and in the following year received an arts council R&D award to attend the Dak’Art biennale. In 2007 I participated in the Picture This ‘Small Wonders’ Scheme. Moving image project, making a short film based on a cultural experience in Dakar. These experiences have added to the quality, knowledge and skills I can bring to working in schools and community arts.

Project 1

In Autumn 2009 I was lead artist on, Cassava – Clothing Art Saying Something and Valuing Alternatives. The project brought together an intergenerational group of women at the Full Circle Family and Young Peoples Project Bristol, in the collective construction of two two-person and one three-person costumes. The costumes which were produced through a collaborative process involved the reworking of recycled clothing using indigo hand-dyeing processes and Dutch wax prints; cloth traditionally associated with Yoruba cultural dress. Cassava was commissioned by Arnolfini and Relational as part of Craftivism, a project that concerned the area of research between craft, contemporary art and socially engaged practice. The resulting work was exhibited at the Arolfini for 2months as part of the CRAFTIVISM 2009/10.

In May 2010 in a show called ‘CasSAva’, the costumes were exhibited at Rich Mix, Bethnal Green, London with my multi-media installation of video, painting and drawing in which I attempted to addressed a number of themes to dispel stereotypes and show a strong sense of cultural identity through my individual work and project collaborations.

I ran a mixed media family workshop in relation to the show. We made African ‘Sankofa’ Bunting, which was displayed alongside the show.

Project 2

The Bristol Cultural Development Partnership, have engaged me in two long term large banner making projects in 2007/8, and more recently 2010 Jan – Oct. In ‘Portrait of a Nation’, ‘Exploring our Roots’ I ran workshops in 16 schools and high education colleges across the city, the resulting work being printed on 3m high banners and shown in the city centre and at Liverpool 2008 and more recently, I have done similar work in several schools for BAC 100 workshops to celebrate the centenary of aviation in Bristol, the outcomes to be hung at the Airport. The original collage mixed media banners remain on display in the schools for the pupils to celebrate their achievements and shown parents, family and friends.

Hillfields Primary School. The Greenway, Bristol BS16

Excellent workshops - very inclusive and creative. Work fitted in really well with our geography for term 2 - our local area. Project really made the children look closely at their local area and what is special about it. We have a wonderful, lasting record of our work with Gloria. Thanks.

Gloria was superb; she inspired and enthused the children and instilled in them a genuine pride in their work. She also taught them new skills and techniques.
Resourced well. Children orientated and led. I have worked with Gloria before in a whole school project to produce a mural. Also the class already knew a great deal about Gloria's life from creating puppets for a production in The Fielden Theatre, City Academy - Inspirations: Black Bristolians Who Had Made a
Difference. Once again, it has been a magical, inspirational experience! The children absolutely loved meeting the person they had learnt so much about. The banner is spectacular!

FiltonHill Primary

The whole experience of working with Gloria again was fantastic and the children worked collaboratively as a team. We have been honoured as a school to once again be participating in a programme of events so skilfully arranged. We have had such fun!
Gloria encouraged them to take on the challenge and gave them an element of control. The project was less directed than normal class work which let the pupils experience a real design situation.
The collage was fantastic and the children enjoyed working together.
The children loved being part of a team that all worked together to create the finished collage.
