Project 1

Project title: The Hive
A participatory project made up of 4350 scientific drawings of bees by London school children. Lit at night for The Thames festival Night carnival, and installed by the river

Emily Tracy was commissioned by The Thames Festival in partnership with The Co-Operative, to produce a participatory arts project for 145 London Primary schools which focussed on Bees. The result was ‘Hive’ which was installed on The SouthBank and then used as the centrepiece for ‘The Night Carnival,’ which is a highlight of The Thames Festival. The piece was 4 metres high and was mounted on an electric wheel- base. It was lit internally.
With the artist, each child made a detailed observational drawing of a bee. Each drawing was copied and reduced to life size. These were mounted to create a honey- comb panel made by each school. The project looked at the importance of bees to our environment and their current decline.

In addition to this project two other projects were run in conjunction. These were ‘The Bee Project’ with Gayhurst Primary school, funded by The City Of London, and A Thames Festival project at Lilian Baylis Technology School. These projects produced lanterns and a large bee puppet to accompany ‘The Hive.’

Project 2

A community outreach project for Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ festivities at The British Museum.
Project title: ‘The Day of The Dead’ (2009)

Emily Tracy worked with Sophie Charalambous (theatre designer and artist) on this collaborative community and festival project in conjunction with Mandinga Arts.
Working with homeless young people from New Horizons day centre and with members of Latin American Golden Years centre, they made 2 large scale puppets, costumes and performances for the ‘Day of The Dead’ celebrations and procession at The British Museum. The young people from New Horizons made a life size coffin, which held a puppet of Micheal Jackson. They animated the puppet to rise from the dead and dance.
The members of The Latin American Centre made a large figure of Catrina - a rich woman created by the Mexican artist Pousada.
The project involved many different aspects of creativity including puppetry, choreography, costume and construction.

The Bridge Academy

Artist, Emily Tracy, worked confidently with some challenging year 7 classes, to produce an exciting project and some beautiful work. I would highly reccommend her to other schools. She helped us to develop new techniques and approaches to teaching art at The Bridge.

The British Museum

It was a fantastic day and I must say a big thank you for all your work this past month with the project. Your hard work and commitment resulted in the most enjoyable workshops I have been involved in, and this showed in the enthusiasm of the individuals taking part and the creativity and quality of work the two groups produced.

Your rapport with both the groups and your ability to engage them in the workshops ensured both the workshops and the day at the Museum were memorable events for all involved.
