I am an experienced artist with a BA Hons degree in Book Arts & Crafts from the London College of Communication, University of the Arts, London.
I am a fully qualified and experienced teacher with a PGCE and I have more than a decade of teaching experience.
My personal Book Arts practice explores the themes of folklore, family history and everyday life. Combining traditional craft skills with modern technology I create unique and limited edition Artist's Books. My illustrations reflect my liberated style of drawing and I seek to free the mundane in the everyday through line and use of space on or off the page.
I am passionate about passing on my knowledge and skills and have had the opportunity during my career to work with children (aged 5-18) and adults from diverse backgrounds and I pride myself om my ability to identify and cater for wide ranging and individual learner's needs.
My creative workshops lead participants through a design process to content creation and culminate in the making of an Artist's Book.
Exploring the possibilites of paper engineering and creating content using a choice of experimental drawing techniques, photography, printmaking and creative writing, the participants then make the final structure using bookbinding skills.
Participants' enjoyment and sense of personal achievement is of paramount important to me as a workshop provider.

Mary leads workshops in Book Arts as a visiting artist in my Visual Arts Department in an outer London secondary school. Mary is an enthusiastic and experienced teacher with a keen desire to pass on her creative skills.
Working with A2 level pupils and groups of gifted and talented students from Key Stage 3, Mary has devised and led creative sessions which include an introduction to Book Arts and culminate in the participants’ production of a handmade and bound, unique Artists’ Books.
Mary leads the students through an initial design stage to the making process, teaching specialist, traditional bookbinding techniques. Concentrating on form linked to function, Mary encourages her students to think outside the box where the book form is concerned.
Keeping records of pupil performance and interests, Mary takes into consideration and caters for the individual needs of each student in her groups.
Mary’s planning and preparation is thorough and her manner is professional and approachable. I would highly recommend Mary as an imaginative artist who is very able to motivate and educate young learners.
